Dog Calorie Calculator

Estimate how many calories your dog needs each day. Based on the standard veterinary RER/MER formula.

Check the bag; default is 350 kcal/cup

Resting Energy (RER)

How It Works

Veterinary nutritionists use a two-step formula:

Step 1 — RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75
Step 2 — MER = RER × life-stage factor

The exponent 0.75 accounts for the fact that metabolic rate scales with body surface area, not body weight directly. Larger dogs need more total calories but fewer calories per pound than smaller dogs.

Understanding Your Results

MER is a starting point, not an exact prescription. Every dog is different. Monitor your dog's weight over 2-4 weeks and adjust portions by 10% up or down as needed.

The cup estimate is approximate. Dry dog foods vary from about 250 to 500+ kcal per cup. Always check the calorie content on your specific food's label (usually listed as "kcal/cup" or "kcal/kg").

For weight loss: Use the factor 1.0 but calculate RER based on the dog's ideal weight, not current weight. Ask your vet what the ideal weight should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RER and MER?

RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the calories a dog needs at complete rest. MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) multiplies RER by an activity/life-stage factor to get the actual daily calorie need.

How do I know my dog's activity level?

A neutered adult with 1-2 short walks per day is "typical neutered adult." A dog that runs, hikes, or trains regularly is "moderate activity." Working dogs (herding, sled, hunting) need the highest factor.

How many cups of food should I feed my dog?

Divide the daily calorie need by the calories per cup listed on your dog food bag. Most dry dog foods range from 300 to 500 kcal per cup. We use 350 kcal/cup as a default, but you should check your specific brand.

Should I feed puppies more than adult dogs?

Yes. Puppies under 4 months need about 3 times their RER. Puppies between 4 months and maturity need about 2 times RER. This supports rapid growth. Follow your vet's feeding schedule.
