Dog Age Calculator
How old is your dog in human years? We show two methods side by side so you can compare.
How It Works
Method 1: Epigenetic (DNA Methylation) Formula
This formula uses the natural logarithm of the dog's age. It means dogs age very rapidly in their first year or two (a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 31-year-old human), then the rate of aging slows down. The formula requires the dog to be at least a few months old (ln of very small numbers produces low results).
Method 2: Traditional Size-Adjusted Chart
The older method uses a step-based approach adjusted for breed size:
| Dog Year | Small | Medium | Large | Giant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 15 | 15 | 12 |
| 2 | 24 | 24 | 24 | 22 |
| 3+ | +4/yr | +5/yr | +5/yr | +6-7/yr |
Understanding Your Results
Young dogs (under 2 years): Both methods agree that dogs mature fast. A 1-year-old dog is roughly a teenager to young adult in human terms.
Middle-aged dogs (3-7 years): The two methods may diverge. The epigenetic method tends to give higher human-age equivalents for younger dogs and lower for older dogs compared to the traditional chart.
Senior dogs (8+ years): Size matters most here. A 10-year-old small dog (about 56 human years) is in a different life stage than a 10-year-old giant breed (about 79-80 human years).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the "7 dog years = 1 human year" rule accurate?
No. The 7:1 rule is a rough simplification. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years and then slow down. Size also matters: small dogs live longer and age more slowly after maturity than giant breeds.
What is the epigenetic (DNA methylation) formula?
In 2019, researchers at UC San Diego studied DNA methylation patterns in Labrador Retrievers and found that dog aging follows a logarithmic curve, not a linear one. The formula is: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It is most accurate for Labs and medium-sized breeds.
Which method should I use?
If you have a medium-sized breed, the epigenetic formula gives a science-backed estimate. For small or giant breeds, the traditional size-adjusted method may better reflect their actual aging pattern. Both are approximations.
Do small dogs really live longer than big dogs?
Generally yes. Small breeds like Chihuahuas often live 14-17 years, while giant breeds like Great Danes average 7-10 years. The reasons are not fully understood but may involve faster cellular aging in larger dogs.
