About PawCalc
PawCalc is a collection of free dog care calculators. Every formula is sourced from published veterinary or scientific literature, and we show our work on every page.
Our Methodology
Each calculator on this site uses formulas from peer-reviewed research or established veterinary guidelines. We do not invent our own formulas or use proprietary algorithms. Here is where each tool's formula comes from:
Puppy Weight Calculator
Uses the standard weight-per-week projection formula, adjusted for breed-size maturity timelines. Maturity age ranges (toy: ~8 months, small: ~10 months, medium: ~12 months, large: ~15 months, giant: ~18 months) are based on widely cited veterinary growth data, including Hawthorne et al., "Body-Weight Changes during Growth in Puppies of Different Breeds," The Journal of Nutrition, 2004, and breed size growth charts published by the American Kennel Club (akc.org).
Dog Age Calculator
Offers two methods: (1) the 2019 epigenetic formula from Tina Wang et al., "Quantitative Translation of Dog-to-Human Aging by Conserved Remodeling of the DNA Methylome," published in Cell Systems, Vol. 11, Issue 2, which is based on DNA methylation data from Labrador Retrievers; and (2) the traditional size-adjusted aging chart commonly referenced by the American Kennel Club and veterinary textbooks.
Dog Calorie Calculator
Uses the RER/MER formula (Resting Energy Requirement / Maintenance Energy Requirement) that is standard in veterinary nutrition. Life-stage multipliers are drawn from the WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines (wsava.org) and the AAHA Nutritional Assessment Guidelines (aaha.org).
Dog Crate Size Calculator
Applies the industry-standard "body measurement + 2-4 inches" rule and maps to standard crate sizes (18" through 48") sold by major manufacturers. Weight-range reference data is compiled from common manufacturer sizing guides.
Dog Water Intake Calculator
Uses the 50-60 ml/kg/day guideline from "Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats" (National Research Council, 2006). Activity and diet adjustments are based on general veterinary guidance.
What This Site Is Not
PawCalc is not a substitute for professional veterinary advice. These calculators produce estimates based on general formulas. Every dog is an individual. Factors like breed-specific health conditions, underlying illnesses, medications, and environment can change what is normal for your dog. Always consult your veterinarian for health, nutrition, and medical decisions.
Accuracy & Limitations
- All results are estimates, not guarantees. We display ranges rather than single values where possible.
- Formulas are based on averages from research populations. Individual dogs may fall outside these averages.
- The epigenetic age formula was developed using Labrador Retriever data and may be less accurate for other breeds.
- Calorie multipliers vary by source; we use the most commonly cited values.
Privacy
PawCalc does not collect, store, or transmit any data you enter into the calculators. All calculations run entirely in your browser. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
